An Insider's Guide to Putney
History
Putney has a strong history in Southwest London. It dates to long before London became the city it is today. In 1086 there is record of a ferry bringing people, sometimes even royalty, across the river Thames. More notably, in 1647 the Putney Debates occurred between Royalists and Parliamentarians to create a new constitution for England. Putney station was built in 1846 and since, all sorts of amenities and attractions have been added to Putney High Street like bars, restaurants, cinemas, pharmacies, and markets. Putney Bridge is a local landmark built in 1886 and it became the starting point for the famous Oxford Cambridge boat race. This massive attraction takes place every year, bringing people from all over London and the UK to watch on Putney’s shores.
