Your Weekend Sorted with D&G: West Putney, East Putney & Southfields
Friday has finally arrived, and it’s time to kick back and relax. We here at Douglas and Gordon have created a round-up of all the events taking place in your area, so that you can make the most of your weekend!
Wimbledon
Wimbledon, of course, is the talk of the town. Saturday’s line-up includes the gentlemen's singles third round, ladies' singles third round, gentlemen's doubles second round, ladies' doubles second round, mixed doubles first round, and boys' and girls' singles first round. That’s certainly plenty of tennis for one day, whether you’re watching from the courts or the couch back home.
Half Moon Putney
For the music fans, there is plenty to keep you occupied at the Half Moon Putney this weekend. On Friday, Vox Empire, The Brompton Mix and Birdsworth will be playing, and this evening of British rock and roll begins at 8pm. Saturday evening, meanwhile, features Thee Spivs, who are launching their album “The Crowds and The Sounds”. Fallen Leaves and The Past Tense will also be performing. Finally, on Sunday, Half Moon will play host to Dick Laurie and the Elastic Band for an afternoon of jazz – free entry for all, from 1pm – 4pm.
Music in the Park
The John Innes Society Music in the Park event will take place this Saturday from 5pm till 7pm. The Cobham Band, a traditional brass group, will put in their first appearance at Merton Park since the Big Jubilee Lunch in 2012.
De Morgan Centre
Those seeking a blast from the past, however, should look no further than the Hidden Heritage display at the De Morgan Centre. The exhibition focuses specifically on the Old Battersea House and its resident Mrs Stirling, who boasted a fantastic Victorian art collection. Display items include handwritten catalogues and notes on the history of the area, as well as numerous works by Evelyn and William De Morgan. Saturday marks the final day of the exhibition, which will be open from 11am – 5pm.
BBC Summer of Wildlife
Finally, if you’re in the mood for a breath of fresh air, why not take part in the BBC Summer of Wildlife day taking place at the WWT London Wetland Centre this Sunday? BBC TV presenter Kate Silverton will launch the Summer of Wildlife day at 11am, and there will be various talks and walks throughout the day to keep you occupied. Activities include up-close sightings of amphibians and hedgehogs, reptile and bird-watching walks, garden tours, freshwater surveys, pond-dipping, wildlife trails, crafts and storytelling. Wildlife photographers will also be on hand to offer advice on capturing the perfect outdoor pictures.
