Douglas & Gordon's Weekend Guide: Pimlico & Westminster
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone! Enjoy the upcoming fireworks displays, and read through our events guide for all the other great activities taking place in your area.
Hyde Park
The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run will take place this Sunday, kicking off at Hyde Park. According to the official website, the veteran car fun “…commemorates the Emancipation Run of 14 November 1896 which celebrated the passing into law of the Locomotives on the Highway Act, which raised the speed limit for 'light locomotives' from 4 mph to 14 mph and abolished the requirement for these vehicles to be preceded by a man on foot”. Interesting origins, indeed! Over 500 classic cars will be taking to the 60 mile stretch between London and Brighton. Those wishing to view the start of the race can head on over to Hyde Park, as the vehicles will gather along Serpentine Road and depart in groups of 15-30 from around 7am onwards.
Regent Street
On the subject of classic cars, the Regent Street Motor Show will be taking place this Saturday. There will be over 300 vehicles on display, from early 19th century motors to futuristic 21st century cars. The show is free, and will run from 10.30 am to 4pm. Aston Martin will be celebrating their centenary, whilst Renault will be showcasing some of their latest models. There will also be prizes for the classic cars on display. If you’re a fan of all things four-wheeled, then don’t miss out.
The Queen's Gallery
The Queen's Gallery, at Buckingham Palace, will be hosting a new exhibition which launched today. “Gifted: From the Royal Academy to The Queen” consists of over 100 works which were presented to the Queen in celebration of her Diamond Jubilee.
Another exhibition, entitled “Castiglione: Lost Genius” also opened today, and displays a number of paintings and drawings created by Italian Baroque artist, Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione.
